I am honored to be part of Freedom Project and serve as its Executive Director.  I am finding that the challenges of overseeing the expansion of Freedom Project at this time call upon and reinforce my commitment to social action.  In my previous work in social action intervention with overseas nongovernmental assistance organizations, I discovered repeatedly that smaller organizations had the flexibility to meet needs that were unmet by government agencies.

For 30 years I enjoyed a career with one of the world’s premier development and relief organizations, CARE, where I served as Country Director in five countries.  After retiring from CARE I was Country Director for the New York-based International Rescue Committee, which assists refugees who have crossed international borders.  My most recent responsibility with IRC was as Country Director in Thailand.  I have seen how good planning and financial oversight are critical in enabling an organization to achieve its mission.

In Seattle, I was President of Board of Lambert House.  I am currently active as a volunteer in a parents counseling service and as president of my condo’s homeowners association.  I respect the critical role of volunteers in the work of Freedom Project and other nonprofit organizations.

I am originally from the Northwest and came to Freedom Project as a volunteer.  Out of that initial experience with the organization, I have become committed to the success of Freedom Project.

I would like to see the program expand, engaging part-time volunteers in public relations, fundraising and organization management as well as in our Inside Prison and Safe Returns programs.  It is a joy to make use of my skills in a human-focused service career.  Seattle has been my principal residence since 1996.  I want to be part of making our community unique in providing good nonviolent communication skills in prisons and in supporting returnees as they transition back into society.
